After graduating law school, Russ was promoted from retail to work at the Safeway Headquarters. He earned his MBA at St. Mary's College and eventually became Vice President of Asset Finance. After leaving Safeway, he had a career as an investment banker specializing in the food industry. Later Russ became a CFO for hire, focusing on family office environments. He has taught accounting and finance courses at Holy Names University, Golden Gate University and Mills College, and other institutions.
